For some time now Australia has been a breeding ground for some of the most extreme and brutal black metal around. Mhorgl is just another name in the long line of groups from this area that you should familiarize yourself with. I am a little confused though, seeing Mhorgl labeled as raw black metal on Metal Archives. When I went into this I was expecting something under-produced and musically along the lines of bands like Vargsang, Besatt, and Horna, but this a bit different as Mhorgl are musically more interesting than those bands. - Teufel's Tomb

This is yet another proof that extreme metal can also be highly intelligent, and with their fantastic performance and instrumental skills the gentlemen prove that metal musicians are some of the best and most talented artists. Shortly put ‘Heresiarch’ is a delightful 45-minute piece of organized chaos that will definitely apply to the fans of extreme, peculiar – and also well-produced – black metal. Hail! - LORDS OF METAL

Australia’s rising death metallers almost deliver the goods

A bands third album is usually the one which dictates whether the group will increase, or sustain popularity, or show them up for the shameless hacks they could well be. The first album comes with little pressure, the notorious ‘difficult second album’ follows. Australian black/death metallers Mhorgl navigated the first two with relative ease, and now Heresiarch confirms that these guys are the real evil deal. - Metal As Fuck

I don’t know a whole lot about Western Australia, but it seems like one of the most unlikely places for black metal to procreate imaginable. Google up some images of the area, and you’ll probably see a lot of sand, wild grasses, rocky outcroppings, sparse, brambly vegetation, kangaroos, and so forth. That seems to be quite a contrast from the usual imagery associated with black metal: dark forests, ravens, misty vales, snowy mountains, swords, armor, corpse paint, and other such objects of grimness and mystique. - metalreviews.com

Australia’s Mhorgl have much to offer and much more to prove with their second offering to the black metal gods. For one, they offer a giant fist up the ass of all the black metal cynics that say the genre is dead and no band can possibly offer anything new. Antinomian is as fervently raw as it is morbidly melodic. - Slug Magazine

Alright, I’m not gonna lie. Yes, it’s time to cut the proverbial crap. It is quite honestly a very rare occurrence, when the continent of Australia is brought up in any conversation, that I think of much more of anything other than the following things: kangaroos, koalas, dingos, aligators and/or crocodiles, AC/DC, Mad Max, Crocodile Dundee and, of course the lovable (yet venomous) platypus. Hardly ever, when thinking or talking about The Great Downundah, does the concept of relentlessly harsh black metal come to mind. - Forbidden Magazine

Australian black metal outfit, Mhorgl shows no fear of stepping outside the proverbial box of the genre’s tradition while still very effectively paying tribute to their inspirational roots. With a rabid sound simultaneously fusing misanthropy and seething rage, the band’s latest effort has just put them on the worldwide map of the more extreme side of music. When Forbidden Magazine recently caught up with Mhorgl’s James Campbell, the bassist unleashed a virtual flood of information in regards to the band’s evolution and their unholy conjurations from Down Under! - Forbidden Magazine

In this release the band takes full advantage of a crystal clear production and defiles it their sick and twisted mixture of melodic and old-school Black Metal in a very effective way. - Infernal Masquerade Webzine

Mhorgl is new to me, so I didn’t know what to expect when I sat down to listen to Antinomian. Right off that bat, you understand their sound. It’s energetic, inventive and fun black metal. There are passages that are very melodic, and every song is rife with crisp tremolo-picked guitar riffs. The opening track, “Nocturnal Blasphemy”, is a grand example of all this. It has many different parts and has some interesting riff progressions. It certainly doesn’t bore. - mindovermetal.org

Press: Antinomain reviewed by Chronicles of Chaos

Much has been made lately about black metal's various mut(il)ations. Set a BM-infected iPod to shuffle and you might get an earful of Deathspell Omega, Wolves in the Throne Room, Absentia Lunae, and Xasthur -- all spawned by the northern darkness, none sharing much beyond a few basic sonic similarities. One band's call to worship is another band's call to a humane farming commune. When brutal speed can blur so easily into hypnotic throb, the tremolo-blast attack seems to be a perfect launching point for all manner of compositionally rich musical adventures. Mhorgl are having none of it. These Aussies will not mope nor plant trees nor call forth a mystical twelfth-dimensional vortex with their instruments. Instead, like the old masters Venom and Darkthrone before them, Mhorgl seek to rock you most hatefully. - Chronicles of Chaos

Australia has produced an abnormally large amount of quality black metal in the last few years, and if Antinomian is an indicator, the scene there just got a whole lot stronger. - From The Dust Returned

On the whole, "Antinomian" succeeds more as an off-the-beaten-path black metal experience than as a trailblazing one. It is not however anything close to a run-of-the-mill BM album. I've a feeling that it will sound even better as time passes; it's happening already. - Blabbermouth

News: March update

March was a productive month for Mhorgl culminating in the release of our album 'Antinomian' to world-wide audiences on the 29th. The album has been released by Italian label The Execution Kollective on CD and via iTunes. The CD features a bonus video with footage taken from the launch show for Antinomian back in May last year. 'Antinomian' is being distributed by the following companies:

U.K. & Worldwide where not indicated: Plastic Head
USA: Century Media & The End
Italy: Masterpiece
France: Season Of Mist

Mhorgl also started recording the follow-up to 'Antinomian' at the beginning of March. Drums tracking for the so far untitled album has been completed and work on the tracking the guitars is very nearly done. The new album will be a further step forward in the development of the band as we try to create a unique sound and style that can only be defined as Mhorgl.
